In-school water conservation education has been supported by MCWD for over twenty years. Currently, science-based classroom activities, closely chosen to meet the science standards established by the State of California, are taught by a certified, experienced, part-time Water Science Instructor.
MCWD funding supports three types of instruction, performed concurrently, each school year:
- Students in grades 3 through 8 will receive in-class, hands-on lessons in water science and water conservation.
- High school students will receive instruction and guidance to greater involvement in water science and water conservation, encouraging participation in science fairs and community awareness.
- A water conservation themed musical show, performed by the musical group Zun-Zun, repeats the important water conservation message once a year, to all elementary grade levels, at each school in the District. Information about this award-winning performance group's water shows can be found at the Zun-Zun website.
- Age-appropriate booklets on water conservation practices are distributed to students in grades K through 8.
The lesson plans and activities available below are PDFs and will open in a new tab or window. Developed by a Water Science and Conservation Teacher, the lesson plans tie the water conservation theme into practical exercises that highlight the unique properties of water.
